Halifax drivers are expected to have to contend today with the first snowfall of the season to happen during a weekday commute.

Light snowfall is expected to start during the morning and continue through the evening commute.

“It’s the first snowfall. It’s fairly light,” said meteorologist Richard Zuarwski. “But even two to four centimetres is something to think about when it’s the first snowfall on the highways.”

“We tend to forget how to drive,” said Zurawski. “We tend to think that visibilities are fine and the road is not that slippery. There are also folk who haven’t gotten their snow tires on yet. That makes things a little more greasy out there.”

Today’s guaranteed high is one degree, which means it’s too early to know whether the snow will accumulate, turn to slush or melt away.

The flurries started in Yarmouth around 4:30 a.m. They are expected to fall on and off most of the day in Metro Halifax.
