Crossing Metro Halifax streets is starting to be a health hazard.

Over the last week, there have been at least five pedestrian collions in Halifax Regional Municipality, including a fatal accident that killed a 34-year-old man in a Lower Sackville crosswalk last Wednesday evening.

Sgt. Jeff Carr with Halifax Regional Police says two more pedestrians were struck last night.

The first incident happened around 6:45 p.m. at Tacoma Drive and Hartland Street in Dartmouth.

An 83-year-old woman was struck in the crosswalk.

She suffered non-life threatening injuries, but some broken bones.

The 81-year-old man behind the wheel was issued a ticket for failing to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk.

Then just before 7:30 p.m., Carr says there was another pedestrian struck at Prince Albert Road and Hawthorne.

“There is a crosswalk right in that vicinity. Further investigation will determine whether he was in the crosswalk and whether any charges will be pending against anyone.”

The 52-year-old man also suffered broken bones.

Carr said there were no road or weather conditions that played into the accidents, other than it was dark.

HRM Director of Transportation Ken Reashor told News 95.7 last week that city staff are looking at the issue of crosswalk safety, but it’s hard to prevent errors on behalf of both walkers and drivers.
