Man accused in beating death of Halifax gay activist to have preliminary inquiry

The case of a man accused in the fatal beating of a prominent activist in Halifax’s gay community has been adjourned until January.

Andre Noel Denny made a brief appearance in provincial court today, where it was told that his psychiatric assessment has been completed.

The assessment was not disclosed, but defence lawyer Don Murray said he did not object to it, so the case is proceeding to a preliminary inquiry.

A focus hearing has been set for Jan. 7, and the three-day preliminary inquiry begins Feb. 19.

Denny was remanded to custody at the East Coast Forensic Hospital.

He is charged with second-degree murder in the beating death of Raymond Taavel in April.
