The premiers of Alberta and Quebec came out of a meeting yesterday agreeing they’ll keep talking about shipping oil to Eastern Canada by pipeline.

Alberta Premier Alison Redford said after meeting in Halifax with Premier Pauline Marois of Quebec that the two provinces will set up working groups to explore the economic opportunities and environmental effects involved.

Redford says she felt that the meeting acknowledged that taking an eastern route with the oil “might be an opportunity.”

Marois says she will travel to Alberta to discuss the project, although she noted that likely won’t happen before Christmas.

British Columbia Premier Christy Clark has said she will not support a pipeline to ship oilsands bitumen to the West Coast unless her province gets more of the economic benefits.

The project is being reviewed by the National Energy Board.

Redford and Marois met in Halifax prior to a wider meeting of premiers on the economy.

The governor of the Bank of Canada is slated to make a speech today to the the premiers meeting.

Mark Carney is expected to provide an update on global economic conditions and the fact that Canada’s economy isn’t doing as well as expected.
