It’s a bird! It’s a plane! Well, if it’s a bird mark it down and forget it if it’s a plane.

The Nature Conservancy of Canada is doing a bird survey on the south shore today, collecting important information on bird populations in the area that’s eventually used by the federal government.

Andrew Holland with the Conservancy says it’s important information that they gather.

“We track what birds are staying in our area and are going to try and hack it in our winter climate and it’s important to see if we have more birds visiting our area or fewer birds,” he explains.

There are all kinds of birds they’re looking for.

“Canada Goose, the Golden-crowned Night, the Red Breasted Merganser should be there, the Long-Tailed Duck, Black Ducks, Harlequin Ducks are big in that area, Green-Winged Teals and Cormorants,” lists Holland.

He adds they also look for birds that aren’t normally here.

With four bird sanctuaries in the area, he says it’s a globally significant site for migrating birds.
