A 70-year-old man from Bridgewater, N.S., is dead after a head-on collision Monday afternoon near Liverpool.

Police say Alan Wayne McTavish of Bridgewater died when the vehicle he was driving collided with a transport truck near Liverpool Monday afternoon.

RCMP say the crash happened around 4 p.m. on Highway 103 when a car travelling eastbound crossed the centre line and collided with a five-ton truck.

A helicopter airlift was called in, but RCMP said the man died as workers were trying to get him out of his vehicle.

The driver of the truck did not suffer serious injuries.

The cause of the crash, that closed the highway for about five hours, is under investigation.
