The newly-elected Halifax Regional School Board has voted in a new chair and will soon be looking to fill the role of superintendent as well.

Three-term board member Gin Yee was elected chair of the board, after former chair Irvine Carvery lost his seat in last month’s municipal election.

Yee said replacing former superintendent Carole Olsen, now the Deputy Minister of Education, will be one of the board’s main priorities over the next 12 months.

“I will encourage my board to make sure that when we do hire a superintendent, that it’s done by a national search, considering external and internal candidates,” Yee told the Rick Howe Show Thursday.

He said the board will probably seek external expertise in the hiring process.

The board held its first meeting following the Oct. 20 election on Nov. 7. Yee was elected chair over fellow member Cheryl Blumenthal-Harrison.

The first regularly scheduled board meeting is Nov. 28.
