Fire investigators will be on the scene of a suspicious fire in Ketch Habour today after a vacant house was set ablaze.

Crews were called to 2 Florence Street for a report of flames visible from a single-storey house around 5:45 a.m. Monday.

“Any fire (in a house) that’s unoccupied would be suspicious and we have fire investigators en route at this time. It is a vacant house. It’s their job, their specialty, so they will determine the cause of this fire,” Deputy Chief Doug Burgess told News 95.7 outside the smouldering home.

He said the front of the house was ablaze when crews arrived, but it only took five minutes to extinguish.

A black scorch mark the size and shape of a pine tree could be seen on the front of the home. An Exit Realty ‘for sale’ sign hung near the entrance.

Firefighters worked both inside and in the basement of the home to douse hotspots.

Burgess said it’s too early to know if the fire was set from the inside or outside of the home.

“Now that we look a little further, it does look like it’s burning from the inside out,” he said.

Investigators are expected to be on scene throughout the morning and possibly the afternoon.
