The captain of the Women’s National Soccer Team made a stop in Halifax Tuesday as part of a multi-city promotional tour.
Christine Sinclair says her team’s Bronze Medal performance at the London Olympics has done great things to promote the sport in Canada and hopes the upcoming World Cup will move it to the next level.
Canada will host the 2015 Women’s World Cup, as the best players and teams on the planet compete for the global championship.
Sinclair says the World Cup is as big as it comes, adding that the opening match of the 2011 event in Germany was played in front of 80,000 people.
“Especially with how we did in the Olympics, it sort of put women’s soccer on the map,” said Sinclair to Jordi Morgan on Tuesday’s Maritime Morning.
Soccer is a growing sport in Canada and with so many other sports competing for kids’ attention, events like the World Cup and the Olympics inspire the next generation of players.
“You need to have the sport on television all of the time,” said Sinclair. “You need to have young kids to be able to see their heroes play and dream to play on that same field.”
As for the Men’s team’s crushing defeat in Honduras, Sinclair says days like that happen.
Sinclair says it’s how the team responds afterward that is important, adding that the Women’s side finished dead last at the 2011 World Cup only to rebound and take home the bronze in London.
Sinclair will have lots of time to watch from the stands after FIFA sanctioned her for her post-match comments after a match against the United States at the Olympics.
Sinclair is suspended for the next four international matches for criticizing officials.
