Halifax votes Savage new mayor, voters return many incumbents to council

Results were expected to continue trickling in for hours after the close of polls in the 2012 Halifax Regional Municipality municipal and school board elections.
The City’s official web site had results posted minutes after the 7pm close of polls, but further updates were few and far between. Candidates were able to get accurate counts from scrutineers, but electors and media were shut out of the latest updates even as winners gave speeches.
Mike Savage, seen through the entire campaign as the front-runner in polls, ended up winning the race for mayor, finishing tens of thousands of votes ahead of closest runners-up Tom Martin and Fred Connors.
Voter participation was high. Returning Officer Cathy Mellett said more than half the eligible voters cast ballots.
