A gun call sent police to the south end of Halifax near Dalhousie University on Tuesday morning.
For six hours, police would only say they got a call about a man with a firearm.
Late in the day, they revealed that a masked intruder with a gun tried to force a man out of his Oakland Road home near the Northwest Arm around 10am.
The man somehow got his attacker to run away, leaving him unharmed and able to call police.
Investigators brought the K9 unit in to help search for the culprit, but were unable to find any suspects.
Police have only released a vague description of the intruder.
