Nova Scotia mounties are getting interactive.

RCMP in Halifax are conducting their first ever “Twitter chat” today with the inaugural topic being the risks of buying pharmaceuticals online. It will be hosted by Cpl. Angela Hawryluk.

Hawryluk told News 95.7, buying prescription drugs online may be a cheaper option, but it could put your health at risk.

“The online business is huge. To get pharmaceuticals, if you go look at the prices there compared to what we pay at controlled pharmacies, they are cheaper,” she said.

But Hawryluk warns those pharmaceuticals could do more harm than good.

“You have no idea [whether] the product that you’re purchasing and you receive actually has any medicinal component or the correct medicinal component to which you bought, because you have no way of knowing where exactly that product came from,” Hawryluk said.

The RCMP are hoping to raise awareness about the downside of buying online.

They’re encouraging the public to get involved in the conversation that will start at 11:30 a.m.

You can join the chat by logging onto Twitter and searching the hashtag #nsmountietalk.
