The province has a new solution to shrink class sizes in the Halifax area: hire more teachers.
Education Minister Ramona Jennex says 85% of Primary to Grade 3 classes have fewer than 25 students.
“Class sizes are at their lowest point in a generation,” she said to reporters at Hammonds Plains Consolidated School on Thursday afternoon.
But after the first month and some shuffling, some classes are still too big because of rising enrolment that’s bucked the overall trend.
“The province will provide additional funding to school boards to hire about 45 more teachers,” said Jennex.
Some classes may still have more than 25 kids because of space restrictions, or boards might conclude that hiring a teacher assistant would be enough. It will mean changes in some class makeups.
