The province says you shouldn’t assume the deal to save a Cape Breton paper mill is unraveling, just because there’s a delay in releasing details of the rescue package.
Natural Resources Minister Charlie Parker had initially said a technical briefing would be held early this week about the revamped funding package for the NewPage Port Hawkesbury mill.
That didn’t happen. Now Parker says talks are continuing with the prospective buyer, Pacific West Commercial.
“I guess we had hoped that thing would come together perhaps a little sooner than they did,” said Parker. “We’re doing our due diligence. Lawyers are dealing with that. We’re hopeful that as soon as possible we’ll announce the details.”
The government announced it would revise the funding package for the mill after the Canada Revenue Agency rejected a special arrangement on power rates for the mill.
