Mayor Peter Kelly steps down as executor

The mayor of Halifax has agreed to step down as the executor of a friend’s estate after allegedly mishandling its funds.

Peter Kelly’s lawyer Bianca Kreuger agreed to an application that he no longer serve as the executor of Mary Thibeault’s estate during a brief hearing in probate court today.

Kelly, who didn’t appear in court, said earlier this year there were “stumbles” in how he handled his duties as executor of her will though he didn’t elaborate.

One of the heirs to Thibeault’s estate, Elizabeth Herritt, will become the new executor.

The order says Kelly must file an accounting of how he handled the estate by Oct. 1.

It also requires he attend court for a formal review of his accounts on a date to be set by the new executor.

That hearing must occur by Jan. 15 next year.
