Dozens of Nova Scotians have received layoff notices as part of the federal government’s latest round of cuts to the civil service.

In response, the Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC) is holding a day of action Saturday.

PSAC Regional VP for the Atlantic region Jeannie Baldwin says members will voice their anger in front of Peter MacKay’s constituency office in New Glasgow.

She expects up to 1,000 people to be there, but says even if only 20 people show up, the message will be heard.

That message is that the cuts hurt local economies and communities.

Meanwhile, a union representing civilian workers at the Defence Department says it plans to protest looming job cuts by descending on MacKay’s Nova Scotia riding today as well.

The Union of National Defence Employees protest is expected to take place in front of the defence minister’s Central Nova constituency offices in New Glasgow and Antigonish.

The union represents about 20,000 public and private-sector workers.

More than 1,500 employees have been given notices saying their jobs are in jeopardy or are being chopped.
