North Preston now has its own RCMP detachment.

The offices have been added on to the North Preston Community Centre. The permanent office will provide expanded police services for people living in the communities of North Preston, East Preston, Cherry Brook, and Lake Loon.

Unit Commander Corporal Calvin Byard says it’s just another service.

“I think the community has welcomed the office, because they have front counter service, whereas they would have to drive outside of the community 10-15 minutes in traffic to get a criminal records check or report an accident,” said Byard. “Here, they can walk up the street five minutes and be at the front counter.”

“It’s too bad it hadn’t happened twenty years ago in our communities, but it’s happened now,” said Stewart Sparks from the Lake Loon/Cherry Brook Ratepayers. “Without a doubt, I think it’ll help with the community relationships.”

The walk-up counter will be open from 8-4 daily and the detachment serves as a home base for the Preston Patrol Unit. Members will start and end their shifts there, file reports, and carry on many of their operational duties.

“We have seen participation in RCMP programs and services increase significantly in these communities over the past few years,” said Byard. “This new office will allow us to strengthen those ties.”

The main office phone line is (902) 426-1607.
