Norwalk virus concerns close waterfront restaurant

Nova Scotia’s Department of Health will be conducting an inspection today after several staff and customers at The Bicycle Thief restaurant in Halifax started showing signs of Norwalk virus.

Co-owner Stephanie Bertossi told Metro News the provincial departments of Agriculture and Health will conduct a full inspection today.

The restaurant in Bishop’s Landing has been closed since Saturday morning after several employees called in sick. Bertossi has also closed her nearby Ristorante aMano restaurant as well as a precaution.

The Norwalk virus can cause vomiting and diarrhea and is often transmitted from person-to-person by sharing food, water or utensils. The virus is transmitted by fecally contaminated food or water, by person-to-person contact, and outbreaks are often found in daycares and long-term care facilities, as well as cruise ships.

Bertossi told the newspaper, their waterfront location is visited by lots of people coming from different places.

The restaurant will re-open tomorrow at 11:30 a.m.
