A regional councillor wants Halifax Water to bring in an outside expert to address a sewage problem downtown.

Over the past few weeks, complaints have been rolling in about a strong odour on streets around the sewage treatment plant, and Coun. Sue Uteck is not happy with the utility’s response.

Halifax Water spokesperson James Campbell tells the Herald that the smell is not the result of an equipment malfunction, but rather the pooling of sewage in low-lying areas such as the Barrington and Inglis area.

It’s hoped that rain forecast for later this week will help dispel the smell.

Uteck says she’s not satisfied that the utility’s solutions are sufficient, and she’s asked them to seek outside expertise.
