A six-week old baby is clinging to life at the IWK, two days after being brought in with life threatening injuries.

Police say they were alerted around 6 p.m. Monday evening by Child Protective Services after hospital staff began to suspect the infant had been the victim of child abuse.

Constable Brian Palmeter says after two days of investigating, police were able to lay charges against the baby’s father.

A 37 year-old man from Halifax is now charged with aggravated assault and failing to provide the necessaries of life.  He was due in court Wednesday.

Palmeter says if the baby dies, there is a chance the charges will be upgraded.
