Beachgoers and sun worshipers are being warned about unusually strong tides at some of the province’s ocean parks.

The Nova Scotia Lifeguard Service says Rainbow Haven beach is of particular concern.  Director Paul D’Eon tells News 95.7, the currents are moving more swiftly because there hasn’t been any stormy weather and therefore the sand is very smooth.

“Tidal currents get defined channels,” he says. “What happens is the sand eats away consistently every day, every day and it creates a deep, narrow channel as opposed to a wide, shallow channel and the current becomes more pronounced in that deep channel.  The sand is fairly moveable on the bottom.  One storm can move it and make it shallow again.”

D’Eon says it’s all the more reason to make sure swimmers stay within flagged zones.
