Nova Scotia athletes return to the spotlight at the 2012 Olympic Games today.
North Preston boxer Custio Clayton is guaranteed at least a bronze medal if he wins today’s quarterfinal fight against Great Britain’s Freddie Evans.
“He’s ready for this,” coach Gary Johnson told News 95.7, after watching Clayton dispatch his round of 16 opponent on Friday. “He’s got capable coaches over there in his corner and they’re doing a good job. Custio’s ready.”
Johnson said he would watch Evan’s Friday fight, take notes and relay them to Custio in preparation for today’s match, set for 5:30 p.m. Atlantic time.
Custio bested Australian Cameron Hammond in the round of 16 fight, pounding him the final minutes of the third round for a 14-11 victory on Friday.
Also competing today will be Halifax runner Geoff Harris.
He posted a personal best time of 1:45.97 in his 800 metre preliminary, placing second to qualify for the semifinals.
On Wednesday, Windsor paddler Ryan Cochrane and his Quebec teammate Hugues Fornel will also compete in the B- finals of the K2 1000-metre race. The pair placed last in the semi-final on Monday.
