There’s no shortage of ways to pass the time in Halifax this weekend.
Not only is it the annual Natal Day celebration, it’s also the first weekend of the International Busker Festival – which boasts a new lineup of fabulous and bizarre street performers.
Event organizer Kim Hendrickson says there are several new acts coming to the waterfront, including a few that are must-see.
“Snap Boogie, who was on America’s Got Talent, he was one of the top 10 or top 12 breakdancers, he’s just awesome,” Hendrickson tells News 95.7. “Jessica Arpin from Switzerland does bicycle manipulation, and The Dragon Masters are a trio street-dancing team that’s never been here before.”
A complete list of performer bios is available online at buskers.ca.
The festival is free, but spectators are asked to support the performers with tips.
“That’s how they make their living, we do not pay them a cent,” said Hendrickson.
The Busker Festival is in its 26th year and is the oldest street performer festival in Canada. This year marks the first time that it’s partnering with the Natal Day Festival for the long weekend.
The Natal Day festivities include everything from a free Wintersleep concert to the annual parade, but festival chair Tim Rissesco tells News 95.7 the big attraction this year is the fireworks display on Saturday night off the MacDonald Bridge.
“Those are going to be pretty incredible,” said Rissesco. “We have a new feature. We’re going to shoot these effects off the tower that are called spaceships. They’re gonna go up and spin and explode and it’s going to be quite incredible to see.”
Fireworks will also go off on Sunday from the Halifax Common and on Monday at Lake Banook. Visit the Natal Day Festival website for a complete list of events. http://www.natalday.org/events.php
The festival wraps up with the the Natal Day Parade, which starts at 10 a.m. Monday at the corner of Kenny Street and Novalea Drive. It proceeds across the Macdonald Bridge and then to Sullivan’s Pond Park.
