A pastor in North Preston says the community is troubled and searching for answers after the violent death of yet another young man.

Narico Downey, 23, was shot on Downey Road just before 9 p.m. Sunday and died in hospital soon afterwards.

Rev. Wallace Smith of St. Thomas Baptist Church says community leaders gathered Tuesday evening to discuss the ongoing gun violence plaguing the area, but says there are no clear-cut solutions.

“We’re trying to do our very best with what we have to try to find solutions to the problem,” Smith told News 95.7. “One of our main concerns is, where are they getting the guns?”

He said everyone’s asking the same questions following the fatal shooting.

“What’s going on? Why are they doing this? What are they looking for? I don’t know if it’s drugs or if it’s other stuff. I really don’t know. Those are the questions people are asking,” he said.

Smith said he wants the men in the community to help solve the issue of violence by reaching out to troubled youth.

He pointed out the murder has overshadowed the positive attention the community received after Olympic boxer and North Preston native Custio Clayton won his first match in London over the weekend.
