An Inuit group in Labrador is promising to derail the Lower Churchill project unless it gets a cut of the benefits.
The Nunatukavut have laid claim to lands around the Churchill River, but those claims aren’t recognized by the federal government.
Newfoundland and Labrador Premier Kathy Dunderdale told reporters in Lunenburg Wednesday her government has already signed all land claim agreements pertaining to the massive hydroelectric project with the Innu people.
she says she will “consult” with the Nunatukavut, but not get into monetary discussions or any new negotiations.
Nunatukavut community council president Todd Russell tells the Herald his members will do everything they can, from launching lawsuits to physically disrupting construction, to protect their interests.
