An exercising flash mob made an appearance outside the Spring Garden library during lunchtime in downtown Halifax Wednesday.
Their sweaty demonstration in the summer heat was an attempt to draw public attention federal health care budget cuts.
Adrienne Silnicki from the Council of Canadians says with Canada’s Premiers meeting in Halifax next week to discuss the 2014 health accord, this is the perfect time and place for the public to take notice.
“Thirty-one billion dollars is going to be cut between 2017 and 2024,” said Silnicki. “We know that will have devastating effects on health our care. So we want Canadians to know that, especially because they are going to me meeting here next week. So we need Canadians to know that that’s going to be happening. We need to let Haligonians know it’s in their city”
Silnicki says the last time the Council of the Federation met, the ministers didn’t talk about the important issues.
“The last time the Health Ministers were in Halifax to talk about health care, they talked about sodium,” said Silnicki. “Sodium’s important, but with so much at stake right now in our health care system we need them to talk about more than just what Canadians do. We need our Ministers, our Prime Minister, our Premiers to really be talking about how the are going to improve our health care system.”
The Council of the Federation will meet July 25th to 27th and Silnicki says more demonstrations are planned.
