It’s been another hot and sunny day in Metro Halifax with a guaranteed high reaching 28 degrees Celsius.

The hot trend has been steady for the past week, and shows no signs of breaking anytime soon.

While the weather has been perfect for sun-bathers and beach-goers, our News 95.7 Meteorologist Richard Zurawski says the heat and sun isn’t good for everyone.

“The potential of having forest fires becomes much greater when we have these protracted heat waves,” he says. “The other thing is, agricultural concerns, looking at difficulty having the crops grow. Of course, this could lead to a bit of a drought. The other thing is, with the lack of precipitation, we also run the risk of heating up our lakes and rivers, and of course that’s bad news for the fish as well.”

Zurawski says there’s nothing wrong with enjoying the heat and sun, as long as you’re being careful. He says it’s important to use sunscreen and keep hydrated.

“Heat is always an issue for the old, for pets, and for young children, he says. “Particularly, you know, people leave their children and pets in cars from time to time and they shouldn’t do that ever. Pets and cars at this time of year just do not mix. Do not leave them in the car.”
