Nova Scotia’s largest airport could see flight delays as construction work gets underway to lengthen the some of the runways.

Halifax Stanfield International Airport is warning of flight schedule delays between July 30 and November 15 of this year as it first shortens and then extends its main runway.

The main runway is being extended by 1,330 feet at its south end and by 370 feet at its north end and in order to do this the runway will be shortened to allow for planes to take off ahead of the construction work. The airport’s secondary runway will be fully operational.

The airport said the work includes excavation, back-filling and paving in support of the runway and taxiway extensions, associated airfield electrical and lighting components, connecting service roads, relocation and replacement of major navigational aids on both runway ends, and replacement of the Category II high intensity approach lighting system at the north end of the runway.

Travellers are encouraged to check their flights before heading to the airport.
