Halifax taxi drivers are taking steps towards unionization, with the help of one of Canada’s largest unions.

Canadian Auto Workers’ union representative Rick Rose tells Metro the process to organize Halifax’s taxi workforce is in the preliminary stages.

Garry Jollymore is a local cab driver pushing hard for the process to continue. He says there are many issues to fight for, if they’re successful in forming a union.

Jollymore wants better benefits, an  overhaul to the driver disciplinary system and more respect from city officials.

Organizers say they will spend the next few weeks assessing support for a union, then will plan their next move.
