Kentville drug death results in charges, a year later

RCMP have laid criminal negligence and drug trafficking charges in the case of a Kentville man who died of an overdose last year.

The dead man’s sister complained when RCMP originally closed the case.

“During the course of the public complaint investigation, additional information was brought forward that resulted in an investigation under the Controlled Drugs & Substances Act,” said RCMP in a news release. “In consultation with the Public Prosecution Service, the new information coupled with the totality of the evidence supported criminal charges.”

“This is the best outcome that it could have had,” said Amy Graves. She’s been calling for justice since her brother Joshua’s fatal overdose at a house party last year.

His death was orginally ruled accidental, but now that charges have been laid, she says the RCMP should reopen similar cases.

“I’m sure that they’re just sweating thinking about it, because I can think of many deaths in my community that occurred the exact same way, and those families know exactly the person who gave their son or brother or sister the drugs,” said Graves.

Kyle Fredricks, 22, is due in Kentville Provincial Court April 2, charged with Criminal Negligence Causing Death and Trafficking in a Controlled Substance (hydromorphone).

RCMP say an additional charge unrelated to the death of Joshua Graves has also been laid. Twenty-three-year-old Bradley Waye of Kentville has been charged with Trafficking in a Controlled Substance (hydromorphone) and is scheduled to appear in Kentville Provincial Court on April 2nd, 2012.
