Decision on SMU women’s hockey coming soon

A final decision on the future of the women’s hockey team at Saint Mary’s University will be made next week.

The board of governors will meet Tuesday to vote on the school’s budget.

The university announced last week it was eliminating the championship team because of financial constraints but after a deluge of public outrage University President Colin Dodds announced the decision was “on hold.”

Saint Mary’s spokesperson Steve Proctor tells the CBC it’s ultimately a question of money. The program costs 120 thousand dollars a year and if that’s not in place in the next 30 days, the team could still be eliminated – even if the board votes to keep it.
