Layton diagnosed with cancer, will remain on the job

Federal NDP Leader Jack Layton announced Friday afternoon he’s been diagnosed with prostate cancer.

“I’m a fighter and I’m going to beat this. My treatment plan is now underway and everything is on track and I’m feeling good,” said Layton in a short news conference.

“In the coming weeks, the schedule of treatment means I might have a little more time to watch the Olympics on TV.”

He added the determination of Canada’s athletes will help him in his fight.

He says the diagnosis came after experiencing back pain, which can be a symptom of prostate cancer. However he says he won’t let it stop him from doing his job as Member of Parliament for Toronto Danforth or as leader of the NDP.

“I have an amazing team, I’ve got great friends, I’ve got an incredibly supportive family,” said Layton.

“And of course as some of you know, my wife Olivia knows a thing or two about taking on cancer having been diagnosed with thyroid cancer just a few years ago. She won her battle and i’m going to win mine as well.”

Layton says his father also faced the same type of cancer and survived.
